Jim Hackenberg
Eleven years ago, Jim Hackenberg discovered the sport of pickleball at his local YMCA. What started as a casual introduction quickly evolved into a deep and lasting passion. From that first day on the court, Jim was captivated by the game’s pace, strategy, and sense of community. Over the years, that passion has driven him to become one of the most decorated senior players in the sport.
Jim’s dedication and competitive spirit have led him to an impressive list of achievements. He has won gold medals at tournaments across the United States, and his name has become synonymous with excellence in senior pickleball. His proudest accomplishments, however, are the titles he earned alongside his wife, Yvonne. The two have become a dynamic team, and their shared success at the US Open and National Championships is a testament not only to their talent but also to their bond on and off the court. For Jim, those victories represent more than just medals—they symbolize the joy of competing with someone he deeply values and trusts.
Throughout his pickleball career, Jim has found consistent success at some of the sport’s most prestigious events. His accolades include 19 USAPA National Gold Medals, 18 Huntsman World Senior Games Gold Medals, and 12 US Open Gold Medals. These numbers speak to his longevity, skill, and continued drive to compete at the highest level.
Jim attributes part of his performance to his equipment of choice—the ONIX Outbreak pickleball paddle. Known for its impressive touch and control, the Outbreak complements Jim’s strategic playing style. He values the paddle’s ability to deliver precision shots, especially in high-pressure matches where consistency and finesse are essential. With this paddle in hand, he’s been able to stay competitive even as the sport continues to evolve and attract new generations of players.
When not traveling for tournaments, Jim splits his time between two homes: Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Surprise, Arizona. These locations allow him to stay active in the pickleball community year-round, taking advantage of both indoor and outdoor play. Whether practicing with local groups or preparing for upcoming competitions, he remains fully engaged in the sport he loves.
More than just a competitor, Jim is also a passionate ambassador for pickleball. He enjoys mentoring newer players, sharing strategies, and promoting the benefits of staying active and involved in the sport at any age. His enthusiasm for the game, coupled with his sportsmanship and approachable demeanor, has made him a respected figure in the pickleball world.
Jim Hackenberg’s journey over the past eleven years reflects the transformative power of pickleball. From his first game at the YMCA to national titles and world-class tournaments, he has shown what is possible with dedication, heart, and a paddle. His story continues to inspire players of all ages to pick up a paddle and discover where the game might take them.
