Erik Gertler
Erik Gertler has been playing pickleball longer than most people have known the sport existed – 37 years and counting. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and raised in both Los Angeles and the Seattle area, Erik now calls Utah home, where he continues to compete and coach in the sport he loves.
His pickleball journey began in 1988 during a P.E. class at Juanita High School in Kirkland, Washington. Shortly after, his family transformed a backyard volleyball slab into a makeshift court – no kitchen lines, just passion and play. That early love for the game has never faded.
“I wish pickleball was my full-time job,” Erik says, “but every chance I get, I’m out on the court.”
A proud member of Team ONIX, Erik currently plays with the ONIX Evoke Premier Raw Carbon10mm paddle. “Being smaller in stature than some of the incredible athletes on tour, the 10mm give we the speed I need to stay competitive,” he says. “ONIX makes gear for every style and skill level – and that makes a big difference.”
Erik describes pickleball as “better than any traditional therapy,” offering not just physical exercise but also joy, laughter, camaraderie, and mental clarity. He’s medaled in several Senior Pro events and continues to compete, coach, and inspire others. One of his proudest accomplishments is now teaching clinics alongside his son Cole – a full-circle moment for a lifelong player and coach.
His short and long-term goals? Keep developing his shot variety, keeping others levels up, and continuing making a strong impact in the Senior Pro division.
When he’s not on the court, Erik draws inspiration from another world-class athlete: Clayton Kershaw. “He’s the kind of competitor and teammate I admire – real, kind, and grounded.”
Erik is also the founder of the Erik Gertler Backyard Pickleball Club, where players of all levels come together to learn, laugh, and grow the game.
