Craig Palermo
For ONIX athlete Craig Palermo, pickleball started with a chance encounter that turned into a lifelong passion. While walking through downtown Reedsport, Oregon, with his wife, a local judge excitedly approached them and invited them to try out a new sport called pickleball. “How could we refuse?” Craig laughs. That summer, he played in his first tournament – and he’s been hooked ever since.
Now 15 years into his pickleball journey, Craig has turned his retirement into a full-time pursuit of the game. Splitting time between Reedsport, Oregon, and Surprise, Arizona, he takes advantage of the great pickleball communities in both states and plays nearly every day.
Craig currently competes with the ONIX Evoke Premier Raw Carbon paddle, alternating between the 10mm for added power and the 14mm when he needs maximum control and soft touch. His go-to ONIX backpack carries it all, from paddles to gear, and even makes his commuting easy when he rides his bike to the courts. “My ONIX paddles give me confidence on the court,” he says. “But I also love how the backpack fits everything I need. It makes getting to the courts a breeze.”
Beyond the gear, Craig is in it for the joy. “Pickleball is competitive but fun. It makes me laugh and carry on while I’m playing. You can play hard and still be happy, complimenting your opponents and enjoying every point.”
Craig admires athletes who give back to their communities – like NFL star Saquon Barkley, his favorite athlete. “To be a superstar and still care about others is something I really admire. I try to be a positive example in my community too.”
Craig’s goals remain grounded in passion and sportsmanship. “Be the best player I can be, support my partners, thank the referees, and show appreciation for everyone involved – from volunteers to fans.”
Over the course of his career, Craig has enjoyed great success at countless tournaments and is proud to have partnered with, and played against, several members of the Pickleball Hall of Fame.
He’s currently a member of multiple clubs, including the Reedsport Pickleball Club, the Emerald Valley Pickleball Club in Eugene, Oregon, and the Sun City Festival Pickleball Club in Surprise, Arizona.
